Rooted in the ancient landscapes of Barberton, we empower creators to harvest raw earth pigments and forge their own studio materials, safeguarding heritage art forms while uplifting local artists.
Forging raw materials from earth
Our work begins in the riverbeds and mineral deposits of Mpumalanga. Students learn to gather natural ochres, refine raw clays on glass grinding slabs, and pulp native plant fibers into archival paper sheets, grounding their art in self-reliant craft.
Operating as a registered non-profit, the academy transmits these unvarnished studio skills through practical workshops in Barberton and online courses, ensuring historic African art making techniques remain alive for generations of practicing makers.
Support regional studio craft preservation
Help us sustain traditional material making and expand artist sponsorships across Mpumalanga through community partnerships and membership.
